Last month, the delegates of the Trial and Appeal Department of the Japan Patent Office (JPO) visited the offices of the Boards of Appeal of the European Patent Office (BoA) in Munich, Germany for a brief exchange of opinions.

In attendance were Mr. Ryuichi Kubo, Director of the Board of Trial and Appeal of the JPO, and Mr. Carl Josefsson, President of the BoA. This meeting marked the first time the two sides met since the EPO’s BoA-focused efficiency-improvement initiative of 2016, which EPO President Benoit Battistelli described as a “historic achievement” that was “essential for securing trust and confidence in the EPO’s appeal system and for maintaining its long-term sustainability.”
